Make Your Own Organic Shampoo
By Peter Weicker

The best and most satisfying way to take control of your hair care is by making your own organic shampoo and conditioner. This provides you with the freedom to experiment, to find the ingredients that work best together for you. Plus, you know that the hair care products that you put on your scalp are safe for you or your loved ones. The organic shampoo that you make yourself contains no hidden surprises or mysterious chemicals. All of the ingredients are readily available and the process is simple.

There are many possible recipes for organic shampoos. Here's a simple one to get you started.

Castille Soap Base

Shampoo is a cleaning agent which removes dirt and oil from your hair and scalp. The essential oils that you choose for their fragrances and properties rest on this foundation. Castille soap is popular and healthy because it is made with vegetable oils, instead of the animal fats that most commercial soaps are based on.

You can make castille soap yourself, but that's another article. It's easier and a little more convenient to purchase it from your local organic products store, or buy it online. Castile soap is available in both bar and liquid form. You'll need the liquid form as the base for your shampoo.

Essential Oils and Fragrances

Once you have your castile soap base, you can add the essential oils you choose. Different oils provide different benefits.

To control dandruff or to soothe your scalp - add Tea Tree oil or Chamomile.

To give your hair extra shine and body - add Lemongrass or Rosemay (smells great, too).

Simple Recipes

  1. Take one 8 oz. bottle
  2. Add 4 oz liquid castile soap
  3. For dandruff control - add 1/2 oz tea tree oil and 2 1/2 oz strained chamomile tea
  4. For extra shine - add 1/2 oz rosemary oil and 2 1/2 oz strained lemongrass tea
  5. To control oily hair - add 1/2 oz lavender oil and 2 1/2 oz strained sage tea
  6. To thicken your hair - add 1 oz rosemary oil and 1/2 oz strained nettles

Natural organic shampoo has no chemical preservatives, so use a cool, dark place to store your bottle.
